Digital Citizenship Lesson Plan

Content Area and Grade Levels

These lessons are intended for middle school students in grades 6 through 8.  They can be modified for most any grade level.  They are intend to teach internet safety and proper device usage at the beginning of the school year prior to students accessing the internet and using school devices.  They also pertain the social-emotional learning of middle school students.

Objectives

Students will be able to:
  • ​protect their identity online.
  • treat others online with respect.
  • practice safe online procedures.

Timeline

These lessons can be completed in 15 minutes or 45 minutes depending on the available time, preferably during FLT (Flexible Learning Time).

Necessary Resources

  • Internet Access
  • Classroom set of devices (iPads, laptop cart, or computer lab)

ISTE Standards for Students: Digital Citizen

Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.

2a.  Students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.
2b.  Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.
2c.  Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.
2d.  Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.

Procedure

Below are links to lesson plans created by Commonsense.org.  According to commonsense.org, teachers can "use digital citizenship lesson plans to address timely topics and prepare students to take ownership of their digital lives" (Digital Citizenship Curriculum | Common Sense Education, 2018).  Scroll to your appropriate grade level for lessons specific to that grade level.

There are many important aspects of online safety; however, the first two areas of focus for students at ECMS are cyberbullying and online privacy.  Please complete the cyberbullying lesson in week 1 and the online privacy lesson in week 2.  If time permits, there are additional lessons linked below.

Cyberbullying
When students begin middle school, drama can also begin.  This lesson helps students avoid online drama.  It also provides strategies when it does happen.
Don't Feed the Phish
Online Privacy
Students are often unaware of "phishing" scams to retrieve private information.  This lesson helps kids avoid identity theft online.

Cyberbullying
When teaching cyberbullying, students need to learn empathy and the consideration of others.  This lesson teaches problem-solving skills to prevent cyberbulling.
